Who we are

 

Founded in 1975, Au bas de l'échelle is a grassroot organization dedicated to the education and the defence of the rights of non-unionized workers. As a non-profit organization, Centraide, different ministries, donations, as well as the membership fees paid by its members all contribute to financing Au bas de l'échelle.


With more than 35 years of experience, Au bas de l’échelle has become a pioneer and a source of reference in Quebec with regard to the defence of the rights of non-unionized workers in the workplace, and in particular, the issues concerning the Act Respecting Labour Standards and psychological harassment. Each year we inform millions of non-unionized workers of their rights. We encourage them to ensure their rights are respected, to group together and to involve themselves in society, in order to improve their working conditions and enhance their lives. In addition, we organize political activities to defend and improve their rights and we participate in public consultations with regard to the issues that concern them. We also act in concert with other organizations and coordinate the Front de défense des non-syndiqués, a large coalition of approximately 25 grassroots organizations and unions.


In the effort to raise awareness of the rights of non-unionized workers in the workplace, Au bas de l’échelle offers various individual and collective services:

 

  • A free of charge information hotline where employees can discuss a problem in the workplace or simply inform themselves of their rights and recourses;
  • A free collective informative workshop aimed at helping those who would like more information regarding the complaints that can be filed agains an employer following prohibited practices, unfair dismissals or psychological harassment in the workplace (in French only) ;
  • A free collective informative workshop to help the employees to prepare for their upcoming mediation session with their employer at the Commission des normes du travail (in French only);
  • Collective training sessions on the Act respecting Labour Standards for the youth, new immigrants, to those who are participating in an employability, literacy or French program, or for any other group who wishes to familiarize themselves with their rights in the workplace (in French or English);
